Much Ado About People’s Accent

Ever since the fall of the Tower of Babel, the bible informed us that people of the world started speaking in diverse languages. by the language people speak. we now know to which race , tribe, or ethnic group they belong. Besides, skin color, adds more to the differentiation. Every language is further sub-divided into major and minor dialects. By this , people are able to relate speakers to certain geographical locations and in various regions of the state (North, South, East or West), country or continent. What a great schism! In spite of these differences, we need one another to satisfy our needs. Nature made it that what a region lacks is exceedingly made available in others irrespective of tribe and tongue, We need ourselves for economic survival, no doubt.

Developed countries need the less developed countries because if they, the industrial world, produced their cars, aircraft, ships and many more, it is not economically helpful to pile them up without enlisting the patronage of other people of the world in need of such products. It might involve training and developing them to use such products. At this point of need, there is no complaint about the accent of others to the extent of using interpreters to get the economic or financial deal through. Allied Forces were able to win the WWII because of sinking differences between and betwixt them. It even involved colonial subjects to various Western European countries. Well meaning  people great and small do realize that  variety is always the spice of life for us to speak in diverse languages and dialects. It is therefore amazing for people especially do-gooder and empty vessels to dwell too much on accents of others that differ from their own. Such individuals may profess they had gone to school or even able to brandish College degree certificate(s) but in essence they only went through the institutions without imbibing the culture that education made available to them. The really uneducated can be excused for their myopic outlook on life but what of those that remained educated illiterates? It is obvious that education is a light to lighten dark allays in the way we perceive and appreciate others.

There are covert universal consequences from criticizing accents of others especially immigrants (legal and illegal aliens). These include disguised segregation into “civilized and non-civilized”. The hosts  tend to exhibit no tolerance of human differing background without consideration for the intrinsic worth of such immigrants. Is it not a “fast food  syndrome” towards them? Environmental disadvantage tends to be considered as permanent stigma forgetting the avid desire of such immigrants to square up to the demands of the new society. The reason for such criticism from certain people in the United States, can be attributed to the age-old historical antecedent of the trans-atlantic slave trade that left a scar in the mind of generations of descendants of the affected people. The only subtle way the unforgiving ones among them can vent their anger is by humiliating or slighting the immigrants who cannot speak the way, they the hosts, speak. Derogating accent is not surprising in the United States,as many immigrants had grown up speaking British English. They were always confronted with remarks of not speaking good English or bluntly that he or she ‘does not understand English’. Which English? One is forced to ask the rhetoric question.

If an immigrant happens to be having a higher score-card in work excellence, his non-American intonation will be seized upon to derogate his job high-flying performance with a view to bringing him down surreptitiously. In many cases never admitted, the accent of the immigrant can be a barrier to his work progress. It can be played out in more apparent than real plausible barrier by claiming that his accent or manner of speaking is too heavy to be easily understood. Larger number of African  immigrants suffer this set back more than others from other continents. Why do we find them still progressing? Many of such people have put in rugged determination like a boxing contender that does come from behind to dethrone the champion. It is sincerely a Herculean task. Isn’t it?

Dwelling too much on people’s accent is counter productive, and not in the character of a civilized society. “Do to others as you would want them to do to you”, because it makes people and especially aliens to feel unwanted where they are poised to put in there best to the advantage of the host country. Children born to them tend to lose identity by disclaiming their parents’ ancestral root, even during non-legal discussions or mere jokes. The hard fact is that such young kids or adults tend to be like ‘BATS’ though a mammal but flies like birds without feathers. The last of it is that pure mammals do not hang their heads down while resting or perching on trees. They are neither here nor there. To my mind, tolerance and being pleasingly agreeable with others are the antidote too much ado about people’s accent. The aspersion cast on the Galileans with Christ in Jerusalem and the fact that Jesus was not born by the nobilities or by learned Jewish religious pundits made these elites to lose out from interacting with Jesus and accepting the Messianic mission  of the Son of Man, corruptly referred to as the son of a Carpenter. To worsen the matter, HE was born in a manger of all places, What a place to be born! HIS mission was accomplished then, now it is being accomplished and also for ever more. Jesus never discriminated.

A Matter of National Pride

There is time for everything, so says the bible. There is time to come together for the preservation of the group and time for dissolving it based on the prevailing circumstances II Samuel 5: 1-5. The reign of King David brought together all the twelve tribes of Israel; while the reign of King Rehoboam caused the Northern Israel with 10 tribes to opt out of the Union to become separate autonomous kingdom with capital in Samaria I King 12:1-16. The Northern kingdom under King Jeroboam went to replicate the God of Israel as known by the Patriarchs with “The Golden Calves” which are mere man-made gods, rather than maintaining theocratic relations with Jerusalem I King 12: 21-24

Between Kings Rehoboam and Jeroboam, can it ever be said that their concept of national pride was in consonance with peaceful co-existence? Definitely not. They both negated the good governance that helped King David to earn the unification of all the twelve tribes of Israel and sustain as well as bequeathed the united kingdom to KIng Solomon. One can easily identify in the two leaders the interplay of pride, intoxicating power or “absolute power that corrupts absolutely”; listening to bad advisors in the case of King Rehoboam and vendetta as it was with King Jeroboam. They forgot the lessons from their historical antecedent. They never remembered and were neither advised nor reminded to recall the harrowing experiences of Jacob and Joseph followed by the 430 years in servitude plus the great deliverance from bondage. A forty-day journey turned into forty-year God-guided journey coupled with the wasting away of erring generation. For the sake of Jewish corporate existence, Joshua sent home the eastern tribes of the Reubenites, Gadites and the half tribe of Manasseh after their patriotic fighting along with other tribes to establish them on Canaan land. They had the apportionment of land “on this side of Jordan” but refused to relent effort until all tribes were settled down Joshua 22: 1-6. To me, fighting for the common good signifies national pride.

Europe had seen centuries of wars and had adjusted the people’s psyche to a level that they never considered war as the first option, especially at intra-national level. Kudos to the Scottish people for choosing to seek their desired opting out of the union by ballot box and not by the barrel of gun. The options in the present age include diplomacy, negotiated settlement possibly after civil disorder, but short of fratricidal war. Nowadays, it often involves trading in and out certain conditions to avert ravaging wars and consequent colossal loss. Civil disorder could bring economic loss but would never be comparable to fighting in the present age that now could involve use of weapons of mass destruction. This was why the world rose against Syria when she used chemical weapon against her kith and kin that rose in rebellion against the State. Russia , the strong ally of Syria joined the world to condemn the use of such weapon and advocated diplomatic solution to the problem.

The United kingdom must have to identify reason(s) for Scotland’s request for separate nation to be  independent of the United Kingdom. The problem has to be solved through feasible diplomatic solution in truth and in spirit. For a tiny instance, how is the Scottish pound viewed at the malls or on the Streets of London even though it has the same value as the pound sterling. They are all accepted as negotiable instrument on equal basis.

I want to believe that Great Britain scored first place among equals in terms of honoring the course of history in shaping their future. United Kingdom is a union of nationalities that was able to hold its own for 300 years. The feat is unique and I fervently hope the union is not allowed to crumble. May God save England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland, from apparent and real “Berlin Wall of Separation” threatening the United Kingdom. May “Shibboleth and Sibboleth syndrome” Judges 12: 1-6 that can cause possible break-up of UK be nipped in the bud by divine intervention. Humility, tolerance, sense of equality without superciliousness among members of the union, and altruistic love of one another need be re-awakened among the component parts. Let there be put in place internal healing of sociopolitical strained nerves, if any, and reform processes to re-solidify the basis for the age-long unity in the kingdom. There are innumerable advantages for staying together because ” united we stand, divided we fall”. The Parliament and the citizenry must rally round the monarch and ensure that the fore-going maxim concerning United Kingdom remains universally and perpetually valid. United Kingdom should not be allowed to become the next Tower of Babel.

The Time is Now

The post at this time happened to have been conceived long before now. President Obama’s address to African leaders today August 05, 2014 touched on virtually the ideas  this writer had in mind and had written them down. It is meant for public consumption and consideration as to what Africans can do to receive partnership cooperation from the United States of America

President Obama’s mission on the three-nation tour of Africa was very clear. The media made us know that he did not go to assess how much aid was to be doled out to so-called ailing African nations. It was virtually a trade mission. America needs economically viable Africa as much as Africa is also in dire need of America. The partnership has to be understood in terms of a farmer should not afford to go on cruise to any leisure land during planting season, nurturing the farm products and more so, the harvest season.

I bet it the bi-partisan benefit to Africa and America would be so tremendous that America would have to regret having treated Africa as a place where nothing good can ever come out from. The old economic order has been changing and it will surely continue to change hence the more developed economies should no longer assume the economic stance of winners take all. A popular saying in Africa and particularly in Nigeria puts it that the young shall grow. Obviously, the elders that give kiddies kindly but disciplined upbringing will keep remaining golden in their hearts in years to come.

The President affirmed that from this time henceforth, it is partnership in business and not paternalistic relationship. America has to be on the spot to protect her investment. Surely, African entrepreneurs and government corporations will not sit on the fence watching their economy going the ruinous route. There is no doubt as to who has greater economic clout than the other in the partnership. Obviously American entrepreneurs without doubt qualify for such. Elementary economics tells us that greater investment tends to yield greater returns, all things being equal. It is incontrovertible that America has more DOLLAR millionaires, billionaires and trillion owning investors than any country in Africa. Reason is not difficult to figure out because most of the sophisticated equipments will be sourced from the USA. It is obvious that American investors who want to succeed will adopt shrewd economic rationality in sourcing them from their home front, from US manufacturers and not from elsewhere.

Let us not forget that there are myriads of Africans who have gotten European and American education. They have worked in both public and private sectors and had worked in America and Europe up to managerial levels.  They have gotten rich business experience as well as knowledge about financial imperatives needed for success in business. Africa would have developed faster if political and military powers that be were equally saturated with tremendous knowledge of how to win economic war. A lot of educated elites had to return to the US and Europe when they were never allowed to use the expert knowledge they acquired. Such had contributed to under rating their worth as knowledge workers all over their land of sojourn. Of course, they did well in class in higher institutions; BUT, there existed a covert reflection on them concerning where they came from. Do not ask me for data to prove this. It is an obvious empirical observation. Besides, those affected would not happily participate in any such survey, unless they have been able to re-brave the odds to return to the attested level they were before returning to their country.

Business world in America will not forget the shrewd business mogul from Nigeria in person of Late M K O Abiola who fell prey to Khaki men in political gab fueled by ethnicity, religion as well as the  oligarchic unwritten constitution of his country.  His victory in the general election described as the freest ever in the country had immediate salutary effect on the economy before the result of the election was annulled. If he had not ventured into politics his business success would have possibly remained a model for Africa and the world to see. Asian Tigers would have remained in business as Asian industrial cats, if the US had not partnered with them. By the same token, look at how Vietnam bounced up industrially after the devastating effect of the Vietnam War of 1968. In Africa, there is a preponderance of political ideology that promoted enlightened self interest rather than seeking the greatest good of the greatest number.

Objective Partnership: One needs to suggest some guiding principles, even though, before America speaks out through the mouth of the President the blue print must have been prepared and revised from time to time. Such would have ensured that America does not stand to lose in the partnership.

  1. There has to be objective partnership within a framework of balanced equation.
  2. The partnership must respect the sovereignty of the host country with a view to not causing political upheaval that can become counter productive to both parties.
  3. There should be rigorous straining the host country’s eligible entrepreneurs if the partnership is to worth the while.
  4. Business should be business. No ethnic bias or sympathy or religious bigotry can ever make any company run efficiently and effectively.
  5. The Chinese have been unsuspectingly penetrating African countries even to the level of rural areas in each country. China has a shorter socio-economic history with Africa than the United States. It is needed to be mutually satisfied concerning the bigger brother and the junior in the field of democratic governance. Why should the US allow others to out do her in spite of her open door policy? Let us get it straight that the young shall grow, come what may.
  6. Unscrupulous entrepreneurs must be exposed and possibly ostracized so as to guard against explosion of time bomb swept under the carpet when it ought to have been detonated before any damage could be done.
  7. It is no news that Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa with a population of 175,000,000 millions. It had long been estimated that for every five Africans, one would be a Nigerian. The country has become a new haven for Chinese businesses. Say what anyone will, coming up with strong economic ties with African countries will heal past wounds in African mind as it did in the erstwhile foes of America that are now enjoying best relationship with her. Oh! US wake up before it is too late.
  8. Let the print and electronic media start beaming positive pictures of situation of things in Africa to the unsuspecting news hungry Americans and not over playing the effect of wars and droughts. These tend to scare the citizenry and more so the potential investors from investing in Africa for mutual benefit.

Oil business in Nigeria has yielded unscrupulous multi-millionaires and billionaires. Most of this category of rich Nigerians can never have any business acumen to show for their wealth like DuPont in the paint industry or Ford in automobile industry.

  1. It is an honest question which is food for thought for all concerned as to its being germane. Will it not be reasonably surmised that there existed evil collaboration between hosts and guests socio-economically in the oil industry there? It is an ill wind that blows no one any good in the long run.
  2. American entrepreneurs should demonstrate unequivocal social responsibility to any community in which they do business. It is not supposed to be a type of doling crumbs to servants from the master’s table. Respect the local leaders without losing site of the need of the so called silent majority. This partnership should be unquestionable. This will help to prevent continual socio-economically motivated armed uprising from the people as seen in the South-south Niger delta area of the country. Social injustice is a curse that will always retard economic growth or relationship.
  3. The private sector that would be in the partnership should learn to give reasonable allowance concerning the non-economic but cultural norms of the host countries or communities without jeopardizing economic interest of both parties.
  4. American War of Independence brought losses to Britain and the US, but as of today the two countries remain inseparable in world affairs to their mutual benefits. This observation is however futuristic in United States socio-economic partnership with African countries. The time is now!
  5. I love America for its open door policy which has kept her alive and would continue to keep her buoyant. United Kingdom (Britain) and United States both put behind them the brutal experience they went through by the wars they fought. There is no person or nation that cannot rise from grass to grace in the context of a progressive mind set.
  6. Africa is of age to eat solid food without seeing her as an entity that needed be given more of baby milk. It is time for business with existing survival kits as reference point to guide in business ethics, rules and regulations that must be applied pragmatically.

It is hoped that the partnership will be mutually beneficial more than the U.S. could ever imagine, for I know that huge success is awaiting the planned economic cooperation. Let us ponder on this question: Will the partnership be in “LCM” Least Common Factor” or in “HCF” Highest Common Factor? Will there be highest common concern for all or for partial or selfish interest? The mutual benefit must be exponential to make the relationship worth the while.

Non-Carnal Love Series # 15

In the beatitude , Jesus taught his disciples thus: “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you” Matthew 5: 43. (NKJV) This exhortation tends to sound odd to a non-spirit  filled individual or an anti-christ. In Luke 6: 27 – 36 (NKJV).  It was in the same admonition that Jesus gave reason why one needs to love ones enemies; after all Jesus prayed for those who conspired to kill him by crucifixion. It is spiritually unprofitable to pray for ones friends only because, both just and unjust do enjoy limitless grace of God.

Love of Christ is love of God

Love binds people together having destroyed hatred and enmity .

In our conteporary age and in practical application of loving God and ones neighbor, Black and white South Africans became integrated after agelong demand for scrapping apartheid. By it, Nelson Mandela emerged as the first African black President of South Africa. It will be recalled that at the end of pogrom in Rwanda and Burundi, the people came back together forgiving one another. They were able to wine and dine as one people, They forgave those who killed and maimed their neighbors during the heat of Hutu and Tutsi inter-ethnic cleansing. By this approach to life, the world would be a better place to live in. it is christ-like. Isn’t it?

Non-Carnal Love Series # 12

Love of Christ is love of God

David and Jonathan were inseparable in love

Still on love that is neither carnal nor pecuniary. This calls for a revisit of the friendship between David and Prince Jonathan. Ordinarily, they belong to different social strata. Jonathan, as a King’s son was heir-apparent but David was from a little known parentage and a mere shepherd boy. Prophet Samuel had to annoint David as king-in-waiting because God rejected King Saul and evil spirit replaced the anointing on him. David’s knowledge of playing music made him a good choice in helping to release Saul from being tormented by evil spirit. 1Sam.15: 10-24

David’s victory over Goliath began to seal the hope of Jonathan from succeeding his father on the throne. In spite of this reality, Jonathan’s love for David continued to wax stronger everyday. King Saul got annoyed with his Prince who he thought did not appreciate his losing the crown. They sealed their friendship with an oath. When God established David as king of all the twelve tribes of Israel, he remembered to show favor to any surviving kith and kin from Saul’s household. Ziba, Saul’s servant, went to Lodebar to bring crippled  Mephibosheth to the palace on the orders of King David, who restored his parental inheritance to him. Genuine love that bound David and Jonathan together brought a reward to Jonathan’s son. 2 Samuel 9: 1-13
