One would have thought that anointed people of God are above being dented. Our Lord Jesus Christ was greater than the greatest of all men like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, the young Prophet from Judah on a missionary journey to Bethel 1 King 13: 1-25, Elijah, Elisha and many more. Zacharia was great in anointing as High Priest. He had been serving God relentlessly and successfully throughout. In spite of his selfless service, Elizabeth his wife remained barren and advanced in age. They have both been praying for others to be blessed as desired with continued success. Delayed response to their prayer tended to weaken Zachariah’s faith in God. In spite of his wife’s barrenness, he continued serving God faithfully before his age-long prayer was hearkened to. Angel Gabriel encountered Zachariah in the Holy of Holies while making various sacrifices for the people.
When the Angel broke the news to him Luke 1: 10-20, Zachariah reacted with doubts rather than busting into instant joy. The Angel had to identify himself as an Angel of God as a means of assuring the High Priest. As God had spoken, His word cannot return to Him void. The Angel did make a pronouncement saying that Zechariah would remain deaf and dumb until the child was born. It came true in that it was on th eighth day at the naming ceremony that he pronounced the name John (John the Baptist). It was like he was tongued-tied and what tied it just broke loose as pronounced by the Angel.
To say that Prophet Samuel was not able to raise credible children to succeed him is unimaginable. It constituted a dent on his greatness. So it happened to his boss, Prophet Eli whose two sons, Hophni and Phinehas were a great shame to the greatness of their father, Prophet Elisha received double portion of Elijah’s anointing but was unable to replicate his anointing as did Elijah to him. The irony of the situation remained such that one can force a horse to the river but can’t force it to drink. Elisha’s double portion of his mentor’s anointing was a result of his avid interest and attention with unalloyed devotion to the cause for which he was called. He had no ulterior motive as did his own servant Gehazi. The sin of his greed and covetousness, to my mind should not be visited on Elisha.
Throughout the history of mankind no one has ever been hundred percent sinless except the Almighty God, Jesus Christ the Son of the most High and of course the Holy Spirit.
Anyone who does not operate on God’s anointing is sure to realize on the long run that he had been doing what God does not create him to do. Unbridled ambition leads one to be jealous, covetous, wicked and never wanting the good of others. Even casting aspersion based on apartheid, segregation and other sociopolitical reproaches, are situations that, more often that not, help to wreck a person or nations great or small. in as much as man chooses to operate at human angle ignoring the divine purpose, man is bound to fail. Rulers like Adolf Hitler of Germany, Idi Amin of Uganda, Mussolini of Italy or Mobutu Sese Seko of People Republic of Congo (Kinshasa) were all clear examples of powerful rulers who discounted fear of God Almighty in their actions. They all failed woefully.
Without forgetting what the bible says in Isaiah 55: 8-9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are my ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts”; man needs to realize that God willingly gives peace and satisfaction to those who love and do His will, but as a consuming fire, he punishes those who engage in wickedness. Comparing human characters of rulers and people generally, with what God wants for us, we see that man’s wants are insatiable. It can go to the extent acquiring greatness as well as prosperity and still not wanting poor people to exist in his sphere of influence. Otherwise, what in this world would have made Haman the Agagite to have pathological hatred for Mordecai, a gatekeeper at the king’s court in Shushan. Bone of contention was that Mordecai refused to tremble and do obeisance at the sight of Haman. One can safely surmise that Mordecai that Mordecai had observed the inglorious ambition in Haman and consequently refused to kowtow in worship or a show of servile deference. Whereas, Mordecai deserved to be rewarded for thwarted the plan to kill the king and nothing was done. It happened that Haman was at the King’s court when decision to reward Mordecai was being taken without the king disclosing who was to be honored. By divine intervention, Haman suggested the greatest possible reward thinking no one but himself deserved such honor. The king accepted his suggestion and ordered him to walk the horse round the city with Mordecai richly dressed on it.
Meanwhile, by the hatred Haman had for Mordecai and the Jews he had prepared the gallows intending to cause all Jews to be hanged. Haman human thought on Mordecai was overturned by God’s will, it was Haman and his household that got hanged instead. His wickedness translated into his downfall.and his property willed to Mordecai. Haman enjoyed promotion to be next in rank to the all-powerful King Ahasuerus and ruler over all princes of the kingdom. He DENTED his greatness by his act of wickedness towards Mordecai and all the Jews in the kingdom in spite of his wife’s warning that if Mordecai was of Jewish descent, he, Haman would not be able to get rid of him. Esther 6: 13b.
